Kanyadan: The giving of the daughter in holy matrimony
There is much controversy about this rite. Is a bride mere chattel for her father to give away to whom he pleases? Whither agency and autonomy for an accomplished young woman? There is some substance in this angst. It is also true that society has been and largely remains patriarchal. I share the meaning of the phrases uttered during kanyadan. I share them not as an apologist for patriarchy but in the hope of providing some understanding that kanyadan was no mere gift, but a father's highest religious duty, one to ensure the perpetuation of dharma, “In faith, with the divine as the witnesse, he gives his daughter for the salvation of his ancestors, righteous conduct in society, and the continuation of the human race. For the duration of the ceremony, the groom is assigned the role of mahavishnu and the bride mahalakshmi, his eternal consort. When the goddess of prosperity, abundance, and auspiciousness is given to the god who is the preserver and protector of the universe, it is a union of equals. Yet the recipient of this great gift is so overwhelmed by the enormity of the gift that he turns around and donates cows as an acknowledgement of his enormous debt. He also promises to tread the path of righteousness with the bride as an equal partner and never straying from the path of dharma. I have reproduced the mantras with brief meanings, provided word-by-word translations in Hindi, the literal meaning, and the deeper purport, as well as an English-language translation.
1. शीर्षक
कन्यादान–संकल्पः
अर्थ (Title meaning):
कन्या के दान (विवाह में कन्या को वर को सौंपने) के समय किया जाने वाला औपचारिक संकल्प।

4. भावार्थ (Sense / Meaning)
मैं सर्वव्यापक भगवान विष्णु का स्मरण कर, उन्हें साक्षी मानकर, अपने गोत्र में उत्पन्न अपनी पुत्री को, वर के गोत्र एवं नाम का उच्चारण करते हुए, धर्मसम्मत विवाह हेतु समर्पित करता हूँ। यह दान सांसारिक नहीं, बल्कि धर्म, प्रजा और लोककल्याण की भावना से किया जा रहा है।
5. तात्पर्य (Purport)
- कन्यादान को महादान कहा गया है, क्योंकि इसमें केवल कन्या ही नहीं, बल्कि उसके पालन‑पोषण का उत्तरदायित्व, संस्कार और विश्वास भी सौंपा जाता है।
- यह संकल्प ईश्वर को साक्षी मानकर किया जाता है, जिससे विवाह धार्मिक बंधन बनता है, केवल सामाजिक अनुबंध नहीं।
- वर‑वधू के माध्यम से गृहस्थ आश्रम की स्थापना तथा समाज की निरंतरता इसका मूल उद्देश्य है।
6. कन्यादान‑प्रतिज्ञा मंत्र (भाव)
शब्दार्थ (संक्षेप)
- धर्मे च अर्थे च कामे च – धर्म, अर्थ और काम में
- नातिचरिष्यामि – सीमा का उल्लंघन नहीं करूँगा/करूँगी
- सह धर्मचारिणी – सहधर्मिणी के रूप में
भावार्थ
वर यह प्रतिज्ञा करता है कि वह कन्या के साथ धर्मपूर्वक, मर्यादा में रहकर, जीवन के सभी पुरुषार्थों का पालन करेगा।
7. गोदान एवं द्रव्यदान
शब्दार्थ
- गोदान – गाय का दान
- दक्षिणा – ब्राह्मण को दी जाने वाली श्रद्धा‑राशि
- हिरण्य – स्वर्ण
- वस्त्र, पात्र, अन्न – आवश्यक उपहार
भावार्थ
कन्यादान की पूर्णता हेतु गोदान एवं ब्राह्मण‑भोजन/दक्षिणा दी जाती है, जिससे यज्ञात्मक कर्म पूर्ण और निष्कलंक हो।
8. आङ्ग्लभाषा (English Translation – consolidated)
English Translation (Essence):
“Invoking Lord Vishnu, the all‑pervading Supreme Being, I, belonging to such‑and‑such lineage, offer my daughter—born in my family—to the groom of such‑and‑such lineage, for the sacred purpose of marriage.
I perform this act as a religious duty, with the intention of righteousness, prosperity, and continuity of society, and in the presence of the Divine as witness.”
